And here's Darryl's first completed mago... an amazing stick with a completely natural bore, termite-eaten through and through. Although Darryl claims not to be an artist, his rendition of Manngaliny (Bush Yams) gets our tick of approval. Wait 'til you hear Darryl play this awesome stick....!

Here's Darryl's second stick, a powerful beast in a high key. Bell is naturally flared. Artwork is again Manngaliny (Bush Yams).

Haven't recorded them yet Confused

Just been flat out trying to catch up on work, looking after Darryl and keeping him fed, etc. I feel a bit like a nanny Surprised

But here's an interesting mago, the one that started this whole thing. It was Darryl's personal mago which I recorded for YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMYS9WAVfNQ

It impressed me so much that I knew Darryl had to be the next artist-in-residence even though I had someone else lined up from Gapiwiyak (Lake Evella) for the spot.

The mago has a mouthpiece insert, flawlessly crafted and expertly secured to the main tube. There is an area on the body of the instrument that has been caulked with sugarbag beeswax. The whole of the mago is red ochred, with white pipeclay painted (and recently re-painted) on the mouthpiece. The bell, at 10.5 cm diameter, looks awesome and adds to the power and resonance of the stick.

Anyway, here's the pic below.

Guan, I know you've mentioned that artists use different species of eucalyptus when crafting magos - each having different properties. Which is Darryl using with these new pieces? Should I know this already based on his location or does it vary?

Looking forward to the other sound samples........... Very Happy

Peace,

Hi Chris,

Darryl says he uses Manbulutak (stringybark), Manbalandjal (woolybutt) and Mandjimdjim (a species of bloodwood).

I'm starting to get some recordings done...

Here's the first one, of Darryl playing his personal mago. I had filmed this previously, but from a side profile, for tuition purposes. Here it is straight-on no muckin' around:

There's a nice dryish bass in the sound of this mago- quite nice. I've heard a similar dry bassiness in some of Latitj Naromi's instruments as well.
