Sorry guys, I just found out today that my forum host has implemented an ads campaign as of today. That's what happens with free hosting. Are the ads bothering anyone? Are they distracting? Just ignore them if you can, if you can't let me know and I'll try to find a solution even if it means getting advanced hosting which isn't free...

Guan

They're not really that noticable so I wouldn't be too bothered Guan. At least if I'm looking for cheap light bulbs, lights and switches I'll know where to go!

Yes I find this very annoying and distracting. They even end up between threats!!! Damm me not like Google Ads. But my friend I try to do my utmost best to ignore them. Maybe I should choose to see this as a very challenging Zen practise. Cool

Eh, it's no bother to me and hardly distracting. I wouldn't start investigating a paid server just yet.

'Tis weird isn't Kyle, the sorts of ads that appear. At least if they were relevant they wouldn't be so bad! I've had ads for all sorts of technical mumbo jumbo to do with computers and databases...

One of the annoying things is getting ads mid-post but hopefully the forum host will see the silliness of that and change accordingly so that ads only appear at the top or bottom of the page. Or one other possibility which I think is a good one is for subscribers to see no ads and for ads to appear only to non-subscribed/non-logged-in visitors. Anyway, there's a big backlash against the forum provider for springing it on us like that, as they've advertised all along as an ads-free forum host. But as they say, circumstances change and they need extra revenue to keep continuing to offer free forum hosting... ah well... everything comes with a catch these days...

Yup, the ads between posts are annoying. It doesn't cost much to upgrade to a forum hosting plan that doesn't have ads. It is only $60-70 a year and is provided by the same mob I'm with at the moment. But let's wait and see if the mid-post ads continue... if they do I'll pay up and get rid of all ads. The aim of this forum is to educate, not to push more visual pollution into your faces!

Looks like mid-post google ads have been scrapped, great news! Let's hope this continues...

I note with interest that today's google ads at the top of the page are for didgeridoos and include Colin's business and some other retailers. Not ideal I should think!

Hey Kyle, I guess it is better for ads to be relevant than for something totally out of left field. Funny enuf, I still get ads for "Discover Sumatra" which caused to me recoil in shock when I first saw it - I thought it said "Kama Sutra"!!!

Ideally I would prefer to have no ads at all. It is worth noting though that businesses that advertise using Google Adwords are generally ones that don't have the reputation to compete with those that do which is why they use paid advertising. So I'm not really worried on that front.

For people using Firefox - get the adblock plug in - you can block all of Google's rubbish in a couple of clicks. For IE users - there maybe an adblock pluggin for for too...

You said it Dan, you're the man! Firefox seems to be the more robust browser these days compared to IE and others, the plug-in you mentioned is a good one too Very Happy

And if you are on a Mac like Guan and I are, Apple no longer supports IE Smile Firefox or Safari is the way to go.
