Hi Peter,
I agree with Guan - nice attempt. I like the roughness of the first two recordings and the asymmetry in the pattern is good. I'd like to hear your Groote version again in a week or so after you've practiced more.

Thanks guys - very polite. I'll try to make the time to practise more generally anyway and if I can get back to some semblance of "playing" then I'll give that Groote style another go. It's nice to know that what I did (recording wise) actually worked and that you guys can hear it - this technology is just amazing isn't it !! I feel this is probably the most challenging of playing styles - and you need aerobic fitness and good timing - something that doesn't come without practise.
I do love the track on Moyles' SNT Vol 4 - Track 10 Marrakwa - one of my favourites from that set of recordings.

I really like your sound Peter.
It may be that you do not play often, but you have certainly conserved that good sound well while not playing
I still want to have another go at the Adam Marrilaga style pieces, but then I would really like to try out the
challenge of the Groote Eylandt sound.
cheers, Martin

Are these recordings available from manikay.com Bita? |
HI Danyu,
well we can't make those available for download or purchase, but there is information there about that particular album;
http://www.manikay.com/albums/sfnt4.shtml
John Burrows put the original Manikay site together and the clips of recordings that are there are ones he has been granted permission to use. It was John who assembled the original discography and he kindly offered to host my pages from my own site when I was no longer able to keep it online. We merged content and I created the clickable maps that linked to his sound files. Ironically I can now no longer listen to them - just can't get Realplayer to work on my machine despite many attempts. Of course there have been others who have also contributed significant content to the site.
I imagine that album is still available commercially - I'll check. _________________ Bita

Why ? You don't think my white beard goes with my lack of wisdom ??
Heh, Daniel,
you can order those Moyle recordings from AITSIS in Canberra if you can't get them in the UK. They're a bit hard to find on their website - here's the link for their recordings page;

good luck mate. _________________ Bita

Been listening more to Moyles vol.4.
In addition to the track Marrakwa, the first piece on track 10, which has a beautifully clear
rendition of the rough percussive accent that seems to often open the standard riff,
I must say that I also really like 10d. (aeroplane) and especially towards the end of
11b. Mamarika (east wind) , where you can hear some really sweet little off beat toots.
Lovely stuff.

I like my beard - as does my lover....., so it won't be going anywhere, just getting whiter...
Yep, those early recordings (and I mean all of them, not just Moyles') are just a cross section of so much tradition but they hold so much within them. We are so fortunate that they were made and are still available. They have a richness, a rawness and as you say Martin, each are beautiful pieces in their own right. It's a shame more weren't made or that those held in archives aren't more widely available - but that's by no means a complaint 'cos I love what is around and I can listen to them over and over and still get stuff from them. For me they also have an atmosphere lost to studio recordings. In the background you hear others' voices, there is idle chatter and discussion of content, there are dogs or children and i love it when I hear laughter and giggling. It seems those were happier days for most. Sometimes you hear a blue-winged kookaburra and then I'm transported - homesick even for that which I've been so lucky to experience. This time of year it's particularly the case cos' the weather is heating up and the mornings start to feel like mornings in Arnhem Land even though it's so far away....... _________________ Bita

Many things in this world is lost - many thing that people loved - when I read that kind of stuff you writing, Peter, I really begin to think - think about what the world has done to the aboriginal culture - not much is left now

Hey Guys,
Sorry Guan, I meant the first segment of the vamp, not the first clip in G. To use David Turner's mouthsounds the main vamp is degul degula with the emphasis on the underlined sections and the breath on the 'a'. It's the slightly increased length of the 'gul' that sets up the asymmetrical tidal feel in this case. It's the tonguing through the 'degula' that when mixed with the passive voice really sets up the trill. Of course I'm not really mouthing 'degul degula' but it's a good approximation of the tongue movements.
The second part of the clip I posted was 'degul degulagula' again with the emphasis on the first 'gul' and the heavy trills of the 'degulagula' section following.

Hi Kyle
Where can I find your clips as I would like to have a go at learning this style. Can you clarify the vamp and tongue positions if possible as all I have to go on @ present is what I hear on the forum. Also do you know where I can get a copy of the cd here in the UK, the postage from AIATSIS is over twice the price of the cd!
Thanks Kyle
