Hi Paul,

My clip is in the earlier Groote thread here - http://www.forum.ididj.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=300

The CDs are hard to find but I'm sure there are some on here with copies that could be distributed if you don't want to purchase them from AIATSIS. I'll make some enquiries.

Hi Kyle

Thanks, I will have a look/ listen as soon as I get a mo, just been so busy lately thats why my contributions have been almost zero. I don't mind purchasing them I think the postage costs of AU$30 is a bit steep!!

Thanks again

Paul

Hi everybody,
CDs are not difficult to find actually as I have just ordered mine. The person in charge is Clint and you can reach him at Clint.Shinn@aiatsis.gov.au. They have all the CDs (4) available

Regards
Mahir

Hi Paul,
I agree that shipping is a bit too much (30 AU$) yet each CD cost 19 AU$ which is OK I think. So to make the postage worthwhile, it might be better to get them all Smile

cheers

Hi all,
after a good while listening and trying to make the Groote Eylandt sounds and rhythms, I am giving here my first attempt at recording a bit. I have a lot of work to do, as always, but I do like the sounds as they are coming out.
How does it sound??

Hey Martin,

It sounds good, but more like an amalgamation of your style and the Groote patterns to me. The tail end of the vamp is good with the assymetrically extended vocal bit, but I would suggest you try cutting the first section in half and only do it once instead of repeating the tonguing in that section and see how it comes out before complicating the pattern. For example, it sounds to me like you're playing (using David Turner's orthography):

Degul degul degula

Try:

Degul Degula with the emphasis on the highlighted section. I'd be interested in hearing how it goes!

Thanks Kyle,
will give that a go, and post it soon.
It was a bit of an improvisation/amalgamation I admit,
but if I did not do it today, it would have been several months before
I got around to it again.

cheers, M

Good one Martin, definitely some recognisable Groote elements there technique-wise. In terms of rhythm, what Kyle said makes sense... with a little bit of variation, you'd get much closer to the pure Groote sound. Keep it up mate!

Ok,
here is the basic riff, as it comes out for me.
I realise there are still many problems, the rhythm I
cannot quite get right though it is getting better.
Back to playing and listening Cool

Groote style is deceptively simple, but there are many subtle tongueings
and accents
that I am starting to hear that are really beautiful. The treatment of the toot, much
sweeter dare i say than the Yolngu style, is one such detail.

any comments appreciated.
Oh, and there are 5 secs of silence at the beginning.. forgot to edit.

cheers, Martin

Sounds good Martin. Nice assymmetrical bounce in the vamp now and the soft toots are sweet!

thanks Kyle,
it is really a lovely little riff.
And then on the various recordings of Groote music there are so many variations.
Glad that I decided to have a more detailed look at this playing
style.

cheers,
Martin

I love that bouncy swing, Martin. Goodonya, mate! I think I need to spend some time working through the Groote stuff a bit more!
