we need to have a workshop from all the yidaki communities and have someone tell them how other people are now selling other yidaki and claiming they are from indigenous people. so buyers are able to choose which is the original or which is the artificial yidaki all these things need to be looked at properly and monitored so that people who are in business with the real yidaki has got the knowledge of understanding how they deal yidaki to other parts of the country.

There are many retailers in Australia selling 'fake' didjeridus and I'm sure Guan will be able to show you the type of didjeridu they are claiming are real yidaki.

Welcome to the Forum Andy, it is great to see your words.

Indeed more information for yidaki makers to help them understand what is happening outside of Arnhem Land would certainly be good. Maybe in that way as you suggest, some sort of common point of view on how to deal with people falsely advertising/selling yidaki could be found. It is difficult for us, as outsiders, to have a full balanced vision on these topics although we would really like to be able to promote true and authentic instruments from the Top End.

I agree that a true 'coming together' between the yidaki communities and the international market will be most helpful. The opinions of the communities should come first!

Excellent suggestion. Only the true owners of yidaki in the Top End can most effectively respond to unethical didjeridu sales practices elsewhere.

When Yidaki is made as Andy and you insist, it will have to be clarified that it is legitimate.

Thank you for your comments. For a beginner, it is difficult to know what to believe and it is easy for a shop or even a website to say anything and get away with it. The solution lies in consumer education as well as prosecution of retailers who breach fair trading laws. There are laws in every country that protect consumers from misleading advertising and promotion. Maybe we can start a thread here, like compiling a list of relevant authorities and government bodies in different countries that have this specific responsibility. What say all?

In the UK we have the Trading Standars Institute http://www.tsi.org.uk/ The Trade Descriptions Act imposes criminal liability on traders (not private suppliers) who 'misdescribe goods.' A local Trading Standards office or Consumer Protection office can give free advice on how to complain and they can also investigate false or misleading descriptions. You'll find their number in the phone book!

Additionally, if a consumer buys goods (a Didgeridoo or Yidaki) that has been misdescribed, or is defective it would be a criminal offence for the seller to advertise a 'no refund' policy. The seller / shop can be reported to the Trading Standards Department of your Local Authority. Trading Standards may then decide to prosecute the shop owner.
