Knowledge can be gained in lots of ways not just books. But reading widely does certainly help. As for a list, there are various reference reading lists floating about, here's one I put together some time back and is so out-of-date it isn't funny:

hey!

ha, ha... yeap, i assumed the name of the maker was going to be unknown to me, unless it was some of the didjeridu players at the old songs of Rak Badjalarr or some of the famous last names from Wadaye, like some Melpi, Dumoo or Nilco...

anyhow, what i was more curious about was the story around it, the one you say "there's a lot of story...", but which you actually didn't tell...!!! could u please...??? ha, ha!

Hi Marcos,

The story is that it was collected by a doctor in the 1940s at the leprosarium in Darwin. I'm trying to double-check some of the details to make sure everything adds up. Anyway, the research I've come up with is that there was a leprosarium at East Arm which ran from 1937-1964. So a collection date in the 1940s is certainly possible. The doctor who collected the instrument is still alive and would be old man now.

and how did u get this particular specimen or the info around it??? was it auctioned, did the owner come to you in order to catalogue it, or u just found it somewhere?

yeap, i heard or read somewhere about that leprosarium...

I found the instrument interstate and managed to understand its history by tracing its ownership back to the original collector. It is one of those rare cases where information was still available for an old instrument.
