|
|
Hi everyone,
I have been trying to play the didj for a while now, without too much success, but I'll keep sticking at it. But the main reason I posted was too see if anyone knows any local didj players in the Otway/Surf Coast region of Victoria, and how I could contact them?
Thanks for your help!

Heh, fellow white man here. I'm nowhere near you mate but tell us what you've tried thus far. Can you make a noise ? Are you having trouble learning to breathe ? What are you using for a didj ? Have you tried any online/commercially released teaching tools ?? _________________ Bita

Hi Peter,
I did a short course with Geoff Shores in Melbourne, that was pretty good taught me the basic sounds. At the last lesson I almost had the breathing down pat, then I didn't play for a couple of months and came back to it and found that again I couldn't get the breathing right. I have a big old didj, but am not using that, I am practising on some plumbers pipe with a proper wax mouth piece that Geoff gave us during the course (it gets some good sounds).
If you can recommend any good online lessons for beginners, that would be sweet!
Cheers.

Hi Ben,
You can try Andy Davern, he is in Anglesea and there's also Wayne Lynch (yup, the surfing guru!). I'll PM you with Andy's contact details, he said it is ok to give it out. I'll also send you Peter Matic's details, he organises Didge Circle events here in Melbourne and can have you on his mailing list or he might know others down your way too.
Cheers and welcome to the world of didjin'!

I'm sure you'll get a swag of responses for all sorts of recomendations. I'd like to suggest something a bit more radical though - because this is a trad forum we lean in that direction in our playing aspirations but many of us came from a more conventional (as in non-aboriginal and non-trad) playing style originally. What I'm suggesting (which is probably more challenging) is that before you pick up any bad habits that may be really difficult to change later you could start again with what you've learnt and build on that. There are some really good CD's now with which you could do this. Try learning western Arnhem Land stuff first I'd think as it seems closer to our western ears and abilities and you'll likely be able to get started on your plastic. Of course it's more complex than it first seems but I think it more likely you could make progress with that than Yolngu styles of playing from eastern Arnhem Land. You can then move on to that later if it took your fancy.
Go for the Mago Masterclass by Darryll Dikarrna and then maybe the Yidaki Masterclass by Djalu' (there are two volumes)and/or Hard tongue stuff by Milkay Munungurr;

I am from Geelong, but as I live in Italy I only get down there every now and then.
If all goes well I should be there and in Torquay in late October early November.
If I had to give some advise at this point I would agree with Peter's comments.
Apart from the contacts that Guan has given you, you might also try to contact the people at Narana Creations on the Torquay
Road. I am not sure if they hold didge courses but it is worth asking. .
At any rate, keep in touch and when I am down on the surf coast maybe we can meet.
cheers, Martin
