Sure mate, I understand - I hope you see I was just having a friendly dig - and of course a wider dig at the way we are all becoming indifferent and lazy about our language. Quite apart from languages being dynamic I see the use of words changing as a result of other forces - certainly there are big changes amongst yolngu matha - which is of concern to older yolngu as well - bt that's a whole other topic really.
I think some of my family originally came from near Kent some four generations ago....

Hi Peter no probs with friendly digs from me but with the Language thing that to me is one of the Beutiful things about at least the English language is that it is designed and needs to constantly change as in its true sence it is a bastard language origionally made up over time through different invaders starting with the Celts, then the romans, the saxons, normans, etc then with influx of migrants into the country in the 50's and 60's witha asian and west indian influance not to mention the good ole british empire that took the language all over the world and now with business and internet being prodominantly first language it is constantly changing.
I heard a great story from a british comedian Stephen Fry who gave his nephew a present and his nephew said thanks unc thats really book. the question was raised as to why book and its is a slang for cool as with pre emtive text on a mobile for cool, the first word that comes up (on british phones at least) is book go figure

And for the technically inept like me (don't own a mobile by choice) then such things will be even more confusing as I age - I'm gonna be one of those old fuddy-duddy luddites, pushed over and picked on in the street....: ) _________________ Bita
