For some reason this makes me think of Where the Green Ants Dream, which features a bunch of captive Yolngu actors looking miserable the whole time, sitting around in silence. Humour abounds here, folks, as the Chookys have already shown the world.

Last week saw an absolutely joyous and HILARIOUS ceremony at Yirrkala, as part of the larger funeral ceremony going on. Heaps of footage is being edited for our archive and for families here, but this clip is for public consumption, and the star couldn't be more proud!

Nice one Randin, thanks for the laugh! I guess the community needs a bit of comic relief after all the sadness that it has gone through and is still going through. I've never seen Yolngu cross-dressers before, first time for me. Maybe we could have a float at the Sydney Mardi Gras next year?! Just teasing...

Keep up the nice editing mate.

Guan

Wow, really?! Vernon's done it! It's an institution here that I assumed was the same at Ramo. I also assumed the whole wacky genre the Chookys do came from androgenous dhapi dancing. But it's not everyone, just a few class clowns. Balwaltja was alone in it at both of the ceremonies in the clip. Waninya is a legend and Howard Morphy promised some classic footage from a few years back. But Waninya may be retiring his coconut bra, with Balwaltja taking up the slack. Funny thing, one of our older Mulka staff said he indeed dances just like his mother, and has a lead on some footage of her dancing at a dhapi in 1989. It'd be great if we could actually mix his mother in with footage of him. Wink

On your mardi gras reference - with all the Galpu related funerals on now and coming up, we've been asked for heaps of rainbow flags. It doesn't seem the same in Oz, but in the USA, rainbow flags = gay & lesbian pride, so Brandi and I have been making heaps of orders from gay pride websites. If there were any of those flags in shot behind Balwaltja in the films, he'd be a a celebrity on gay websites across the world by now.

A few of the good edits were Biyalnga (from the hip hop video) and Dindirrk's. Biyal found and put in the great bit of the woman ducking in and out behind the tree, which makes me laugh every time.

Last thing - watching it again, I thought about how hard the woman whose death we're mourning would have laughed at that video. She would have loooooovvvveeeed it. Sad At least it all took place close to where her body is resting (surrounded by rainbow flags).

The men are too serious at Ramo during dhapi', the women, however, run amok!
