It's too bad, in the compressed version on YouTube, the sound clarity drops so that you can't hear the yidaki too clearly until the camera mic is right on it. You almost miss the first two switches, but I guess you still get the idea.
I didn't notice until watching this footage that young Warpurrpurr Mununggurr's now got a little moustache on his lip just like his uncle, the famous Mununggurr yidaki-ist usually had. Must be good for the technique! Nice story - at Garma last year just after the death, on the first day of the yidaki class, I was driving Djalu and Mirarra from their camp to the yidaki class across the grounds, and they saw Warpurrpurr walking along. Djalu said, 'stop, let's pick him up' and Mirarra let slip, 'yeah, he plays just like Milkay!' Djalu had me introduce Warpurrpurr as a son (brother's son by our reckoning) of the deceased, who was going to play for the group as a reminder and tribute to the teacher who couldn't be there.
Later that night when the Gumatj clan were going to dance, nobody could find the yidaki player Galarrwuy Yunupingu wanted. Warpurrpurr came up to fill in, probably accompanying Galarrwuy for the first time, as his uncle had done so many times before.
So it's brief and a bit silly, but that clip may be your first intro to the Hard Tongue heir apparent. Although we'll see what happens in 5 years with Buyu Marika, the boy pictured on the Hard Tongue CD!
