Okay, I've got to brag here. After years of reading credits to Andrew Blake and Will Stubbs of Buku-Larrnggay Mulka in major exhibition catalogues, this is the first one I get to see Randin Graves thanked in. The Mulka Project should have gotten a mention foremost, so I'll stipulate that next time. I edited all the northeast Arnhem Land name spellings, clan affiliations, homelands, etc. of the artists and identified some paintings from the collection with the help of Wukun Wanambi, Baluka Maymuru, Banduk and the deceased Dr. R Marika. Of course some small details got mixed up at the last moment by somebody as is prone to happen, but most of it came through all right!
It's a good collection, and is (was?) a great looking show although the west Arnhem stuff seemed to be more significant than the northeastern, but maybe I just have higher expectations for the NE art. A few were great, though. I'm not in Yirrkala but when I'm back I'll post a photo of some of our crew with the banner for the show with a work from Mawalan Marika that moved me most. I'd seen it on the flyers and the banner as this huge thing. In person I was stunned to find that it was actually a very small bark with very fine painting rather than the large, broad-brushed work I was expecting.
I'll see if I can get a rush order in for a few copies to have some for anybody coming to the Djalu class who's interested. We just have one comp copy that anyone who comes by can flip through if they like. It really is a lovely book, and very thick - there's absolutely heaps of art in there. Can't say I've had time to actually read it yet, myself.
