This one is for you Kyle, and all other Groote aficionados. It was the first time for me to see and hear Groote Eylandt yiraka playing in person and am glad I got it on video.

Jason Guwanbal was a good yidaki player as a young man who played in ceremony, and it looks like he has still got it. He's not an innovator or virtuoso like Larry Winiwini or Adam Marrilaga, but is in the old-school mould.

Djalu' needs no introduction. In the video, he helps Guwanbal with his own rendition of Groote Eylandt yiraka didgeridoo accompaniment and ends with mouth sounds to show the tonguing patterns needed to play these complex rhythms.

Good stuff Guan! Thanks for posting this. It's very interesting to hear Djalu's version of the Groote patterns as his distinctive 'voice' and style comes through. I find it's the asymmetry of the Groote style patterns that make them so interesting.

Ive tried to boost Djalu a little as the tapping rythme cuts over him however has caused a lot of hiss which I will try and fillter out?

True eh! Guwanbal sounds closer to what I imagine Groote style to be, as I believe he has spent some time there... either his father or his father's brother lived there. Djalu's 'tongue' or 'voice' is very distinctive and is all his own, not matter what style he plays.

Next question is, who wants to try out some Groote style of play?

I love the Groote stuff! Especially with the characteristic 'shaky voice' singing accompaniment Smile If I recall correctly, Kyle does a great 'shaky voice' himself Smile

All this talk about Groote made me dig up my Turner recordings that accompanied his 'Genesis' books. I especially like Yimaduwaiya, Stingray and Duwalya, Curlew.

I am indeed although I've not finalised my plans. Are you staying in town or heading back to the wilds of Kent? I don't get in until just past 8pm.

Okay, as promised here's a recording of my Groote style. It's titled 'Groote Medley' as I use a few separate patterns. Perhaps I should've called it 'Yiragamuffin'!

Good one Kyle. I might give it a go later... I like Guwanbal's yiraka style and will try to emulate him. The rapid tongued doublet is not as easy as it sounds!

Kyle and others, I started a new thread in the techniques section on Groote yiraka style:

http://www.forum.ididj.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=2040#2040

I made a couple of recordings, let me know what you think.
