Not sure where to put this post, this is as good a place as any I suppose.

I got this today, see below, sent to me from Ramingining and gifted by Dick Yambal Durrurrnga. I've not seen something like this before but was told it was special, and that it has a name, Remu, which is a freshwater bream species. Bita, have you seen something like this at Ramo?

Of note is the hole at the bell end, which kinda reminded me of some Dupun or hollow-log coffins. There are also incised bands in the wood where the mid-section painting starts and ends. This yidaki belongs to the Birritjama people from Guruwana.

Very interesting, Guan! If you hadn't IDed it as a yidaki, it almost could pass as a smoking pipe (without knowing the scale).

The instrument is 157 cm long and plays in the key of low B. Love it!

Eh Guano,

well, you know he's my "Dad" and you know my car has those remu painted on the side by one of his sons but nope, haven't seen one like that. I may have without realising though - I'm not trying to be mysterious, it's just that one day I dropped around to his place and saw a few things by accident, amongst which was a yirdaki which may have been of this design. It was quite stout, plain - no minytji but I think I saw enough to say the "throat" are just below the mouthpiece was narrowed/carved. All was qucikly covered and I didn't press him. I did try to raise it a year or so later but didn't get anywhere......are they also dhapalany painted on there or is it just remu ?

That hole - yep just like those logs - 'rraku mutikaynytja yakuna Bardurruna - nhe marrnggi ? Yo, rusty I know....

Hey Bita,

Hmmm... interesting, I wonder if it is the same instrument you saw?

The yidaki has Dhapalany (that's itchy caterpillars for those who don't know) painted on it amongst other things. Hey, I'm not sure if I can use that word as one of David Gulpilil's sisters passed away very recently, not sure which one, but he has a sister by that name, Linda Balupalu's mother yes?

Anyway, there's also conch shells and black crow painted on the instrument, as well as what looks like catfish, no doubt connected to Badurru mythology.

It's a very cool specimen and quite a piece for the collection I should think!

Hi Martin, I don't know exactly how it is supposed to be played to be honest. We'll get Dharra'puy to give it a toot eh?

Here's a close-up of the incised banding at one end and the hole.

How much does the hole affect the fundamental? I expect it won't alter the pitch very much due to it's position quite near the distal end and the instrument being low already, but it must have some impact on the drone. Have you tried playing it with the holes covered to compare?

I certainly wouldn't mind hearing Dharra'puy giving this one a honk!

Kyle, I'm sure that the proximity of the hole to the distal end would have negligible effects on the drone- but it would be an interesting exercise just the same.

Hi Kyle, I'd say it would have a little bit of an effect. I haven't tried to cover up the hole to see if there is a change in pitch... my hands don't reach that far down! I could cover the holes with a plastic bag and then wrap tape around it I guess. That will be my next science experiment Very Happy

Distal end Jason. If they were that close to the proximal end you wouldn't be able to play it!

Let us know the results of your experiment Guano.

Yes, indeed! I don't know why it was sent to me though, I didn't ask for it and was a bit taken aback when I unwrapped it this morning. Something like this should be kept by the family. Maybe I'm supposed to look after it. My guess is that because Yambal's granddaughter stayed here last year along with other kids from Ramo they would have reported back that this place was like a museum.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Try playing it with the bell end covered Guan and see what results when the sound exits only the holes!
