Im with you on this one Jason I like all styles inc contemp however I have found myself moving towards a WAL style as I find it easier to get the sound and able to sustain the playing as I tend to get Puffed out (OOHH ER MISSUS) by NEAL style.

and there is slightly more to WAL than just Gunborg there is also the Wangga style as well that I find very interesting and slightly different in playing style but yet similar

The draw of alcohol and the attraction of Balanda culture cannot be over-stated. In Maningrida today, I repeatedly hear that young people are not learning ceremony. Listen to the new Maningrida Traditional Music Compilation and you'll see that they're all old fellas on there.
.

This is very disconcerting to me. Do you think that the Balanda interest in WAL can, in the long run, be used to help revive it? and What else do you suggest can help that?

Hi Mahir,

I don't know to be honest. However, the best efforts to change things I believe are always internal ones. When there are strong people in the community/family/outstation who know what they want, it becomes an easier task for all. However, how to get the desired change is another matter...

I like the partnership model, where Indigenous and non-Indigenous people can work together on finding solutions... each party brings something unique to the collective effort.
