I'm sure it's been seen by most of us here, but it's worth mentioning:

I read 'The Tracker' as a conversation between archetypal characters, juxtaposed by the impressionist paintings that mask the violence behind them. Featuring the always recognizable David Gulpilil.

Directed by Rolf de Heer of 'Ten Canoes' fame.

Indeed- equally compelling is the documentary of David on the DVD.

One thing I particularly like about Rolf de Heer's cinematography is his use of color. The sepia tones comes through and instantly 'ages' the film, hearkening back to yesteryears. I have the same experience when watching 'Ten Canoes'. Actually, 'twas your YouTube clip that prompted me to reexamine 'The Tracker'. 'Walkabout' is next on the list.

Hey Jason,

That's another timeless classic! We should compile a filmography or videography of such films eh? Do you know Jedda? It was the first feature film to have Aboriginal actors in the lead roles. And the first for something else as well, but I can't remember... my brain is fading... maybe something to do with colour film rather than black and white.

Hey Guan:

No, can't say that I know this one at all. But a quick search on IMDB.com yielded an entry; 'Jedda' aka 'Jedda the Uncivilized' was the first color (sorry, 'colour' Wink ) film in Australia, released 1955.

There is didgeridoo in Jedda by the way... interesting to hear what was played in 1955!

A filmography for this Forum would simply be a list of films that have Indigenous Australian content, with maybe a review or short description accompanying each film. Films are pretty important I reckon as they have a way of making subtle statements as well as to enter public consciousness. And because they are a form of entertainment, they are far-reaching and have no political, social, cultural or economic barriers...

Another good one, a newer film, is Jindabyne. It was screened last year.

Fair enough- I believe in just this thread, we've mentioned a few important ones!

On the impact of film, there is heaps written on the subject- some arguing that the audience is the 'fifth wall' (i.e that the audience is constantly shifting, therefore every viewing of a film is different). Just because it is 'fixed' in time in celluloid, doesn't mean that it is a rarefied thing. Roland Barthes was the big one here. There's the breakdown of the narrative structure/manipulating time & space (I always use 'Pulp Fiction' as anecdotal evidence, experimental film, questions like 'is film/cinema constrained by the same conventions of reality as the audience, or does it exist as another art form?'

Oh dear, I should stop before I scare everyone away with my theoretical ramblings! Confused

Perhaps you can make it a 'sticky'?
