Aussie anthropology legend Les Hiatt has died at the age of 76. My condolences Guan.

Sad news indeed. I have a number of Les's books, and have always enjoyed his writing style. Definitely an important man to anthropology studies.

RIP Les.

Les was the only Balanda I knew who could speak Gidjingali fluently, or speak it at all, quite an amazing character as are/were many of the anthropologists of old who developed close-knit relationships with families and communities in Indigenous Australia. He will be sadly missed.

Guan

I heard about this from my father. I am very sad about this. I really wanted to meet him and now I never will. For anyone who can, I suggest watching Waiting for Harry. Les did that film donkey's years ago - it is more than an anthro film - it is more about the relationship between the anthropologist and the informants. Les was respected and liked by the people in that film. 'This is Frank Gurramanamana. He calls me brother, and I call him brother'.

Its so powerful. I wish I had met him. Guan, my condolences.

Dan
