Decided to join facebook this weekend and was surpised by the sheer amount of didjers on there - both groups and individuals. The largest group 'didgeridoo' had 2,222 friends associated. Some groups were found under Yidaki, Yirdaki, Mago etc. Some were downright weird, and some were modest versions of our great mother site!
So, I made a large pot of tea, sat down in earnest, weeded out the bigger, better groups, joined them; then posted recommendations for those interested in the 'trad' side of things to come check out iDIDJ's YouTube channel, forum & web. Haven't pissed anyone off yet so far, so with a bit of luck we may get some new blood as a result. One thing that concerned me with some sites was regurgitation of the usual trail of urban myth - one site had even lifted Guan's video of Larry Gurruwiwi (I tagged the clip with the comment that acknowledgement of the copyright owner/source in the caption would at least be the polite thing to do, and to come look at iDIDJ YouTube for lots more quality stuff!).
I found facebook a fun experience, and within a short space of time a whole ton of old friends and colleagues were linking up and chatting away - the sheer connective power of this social networking site totally surprised me - and left me wondering if iDIDJ should have a facebook/myspace etc presence just to act as a gateway for the hub itself. Poor old Guan has enough to do I know, so maybe some of us could help. One pitfall would be in using the hub's key email address - this could easily be swamped (I got 40 messages within a space of 8 hours with just 14 friends). Anyways, it was just a thought on cranking-up the PR side of things. Meanwhile, if any of you are facebookers etc may I suggest a
'stealth' PR campaign of comments pointing to iDIDJ??
