"...a bit of a stretch to compare the two..." ???! That statement is no more than arse-gravy hiding behind the semantics of service provision start-up (I used to provide such statement to officials to dig them out, so I know). The fact that the edu dept. hasn't capitalised on a brave self-attempt for 3 decades is shameful; actually, no, it's a deliberate decision. What a remarkable coincidence that the edu dept. is reviewing policy following this news item (BTW UK gov depts. always get prior warning of broadcast of reports - even damning ones). As a former senior government advisor, one thing that constantly strikes me about presentation and handling of aboriginal affairs is what I called the 'volcano effect' - a problem builds up massively, grabs media attention, there's a flurry of activity, then nothing until the next eruption. I may be wrong here, but from this side of the globe, I see no concerted, genuine, centrally 'institutionalised' effort to proactively handle a wide variety of issues aside from academic institutions and those associated with such. Sadly, it seems the coroner or lawyer is the prominent offical when it comes to aboriginal matters. Maybe the policy of assimilation never left the agendas of those in power... |
