This is reminiscent of Mandawuy's stoush with the Catani Bar one night in March 1992 in St Kilda, Melbourne. It is sad, but racism still exists...

Quote:
Aboriginal composer's club snub

A WORLD-renowned Aboriginal composer buzzing after a standing ovation at the Sydney Opera House was turned away from half-empty Kings Cross haunt Hugo's with his pal told: "You can't expect us to just let anyone in."

William Barton, who has been to some of the world's top bars over his acclaimed career, was told the venue was "at capacity" as he tried to get it at 9.30pm Sunday to celebrate good friend Katarina Kroslakova's 30th birthday.

Furious Kroslakova immediately fronted Hugo's door staff - and was rudely told: "You can't expect us to just let anyone in."

Barton's appalled mates left the premises immediately, only to watch other people being allowed in as they walked away.

A reluctant Barton said yesterday he was disappointed but not surprised by the brush-off at Hugo's, which is known as "Huge egos" among the Sydney party crowd for its snobby airs.

"I don't involve myself in power trips - I'm beyond that - but I think perhaps the staff at that venue should not be so quick to judge a book by its cover," he said.

"I have been to some of the best bars in the world, but Hugo's is not the kind of place I would ever want to go to again."

While the official line from Hugo's management was "no comment" yesterday, the incident came as a sad contrast to the thrill Barton experienced when he was given a standing ovation after his performance with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Opera House on Friday night.

The composer has been performing orchestral concerts for a decade.
